October 2008 Prayer Circle

“You are witnesses of these things.  And behold, I am sending forth the promise of my Father upon you, you will be clothed with power from on high.”  Luke 24:47,48.

Come, o come, Thou quick’ning Spirit, God from all eternity!
May Thy power never fail us; dwell within us constantly.
Then shall truth and life and light banish all the gloom of night. –Heinrich Held. 1664.

September 2008 MISSION PRAYER CIRCLE

Devotional Thought:  In contrast to power seeking culturally elite manipulative prayers seeking to find the right posture or confession to receive (or grasp?) a “shower of blessing”, the biblically based and motivated disciple seeks God’s glory and will. With a humble expectant spirit they are moved by the Spirit of God who gifts us with such things as mercy, perseverance and joy in our giving and in our serving.  Read Acts 1:14, 4:24-26, 29-31…  Some of these same folk who lifted their voice in prayer had heard the words of Jesus about promised answers to ‘prayers of unity’. “Again, I tell you if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done by my Father in heaven.” (Matt.18:19)  But, we must keep in mind the mindset of this promise-giver/promise-keeper.  This statement of great comfort for us was given just after the parable of the lost sheep and just before strong words regarding the priority of forgiveness and mercy.  SO, with this in mind, what could be of greater alignment with our Savior’s purposes in prayer than to agree together regarding the salvation of peoples around the world for whom He died?

Prayer Needs to remember:

  1. Taiwan Missionaries sharing the vision of reaching the Hakka people with CLBA churches through December and then returning to work closely together as a church planting team.  Mike & Delores Kittelson (grown children Anna , Trygve), Ethan & Sandy Christofferson (Caleb 15, Hannah 10), and Andrew & Kris Larsen (Isaak 4, Noelle 2, Joseph 1).

Mission Prayer Circle   *    June 5th, 2008

Earthquake Victims in China/Myanmar Victims still in need of AID.

The official death toll stands at 12,012 (6/4/08) and the media stands on a total of over 19,000.  These are days of unprecedented opportunity for several Christian Agencies to give witness through loving acts, provisions, and simple short moments of testimony.  Limitations and threats to the underground church are real so ex-patriots want to be careful not to inflict greater harm on their Christian brethren.

Many missionaries and relief efforts by evangelicals are providing hope in areas untouched by government and international aid.  Especially pray for World Vision, C&MA, Baptist Relief, Samaritan’s Purse, and NMSI who are often working together to be more effective in their help and witness.

Japan

The first Methodist missionaries arrived in Japan in1859 without a convert till 1864. Presbyterians in 1885, Baptist in 1889.  Then a season of harvest,  OMS International in 1901 began evangelistic services in Tokyo nonstop every night till 1912 with over 15,000 converts!  By 1907 there were 26 Protestant Mission Agencies with over 600 churches and 150,000 communicant members.  In 1914 an article in the University Press in Boston states, “It does not seem strange that many of the more astute Japanese should feel that Japan will soon be a Christian nation.”  TODAY?  Less than 1.5% are evangelical Christians!  THE LB began work in Japan in 1949 and today averages 1,200 Sunday worshipers in 29 congregations and values its Seminary for training as well.  Our centers in this land of 127 million are found in Takanosu-Honshu, Sendai, Tokyo and Yokohama.
Arnie & Bonita work in Church planting and involved in Friendship Evangelism, mentoring, and training.
Dean & Linda are directors of the Outreach through English Classes & support a Church planting effort.
